Why people are angry at priests

A dear friend of mine sent me a web address to a blog that I have found…well words fail me…beyond disheartening.  The link is below is the blogs web address.  My response to my friend is below that.  Since it was an e-mail reply I kept it relatively short.

Without reading the whole thing because it is nauseating to me let me answer his question.  So many people, not just Catholics, are so angry with so many priests because; 1. Some have failed mightily to live up to what the Catholic Church stands for and believes.  2. Many of the priests all over the world, this includes bishops and diocesan administrators, have lied…especially about the issue of clergy sexual abuse.  3. These same men continue to make excuses and point the finger of blame even after the current pope has told them to stop such behavior and courts have found them liable for behavior that is beyond grievous. 4. Many, many members of the Church, not just priests, do not live or operate in reality, people who do operate in reality are appalled at the current situation.

Unfortunately all priests have been tainted by the bad behavior of other priests.  Maybe it’s not fair but it is reality, welcome to the real world with real human beings living in it.  It is a perfect example of what the Church teaches that there is really no such thing as a sin by one person that does not effect the whole Body of Christ.  For a priest not to know that the effect of the scandal will/does reach into everything priests are now involved in, (parish administration and inter dynamics included), is at best naive.  And that perpetuates even more anger as well as the mindset that seems to be all to true in a lot of cases that priests just don’t get it  This blog is so disheartening to me because it once again confirms my fear that the clueless and arrogant do not understand the far-reaching effects of this scandal.

About follow1in3

I am a Roman Catholic priest ordained for the Diocese of Wilmington, DE who is also a victim of clergy sexual abuse. I am often angered by the insensitiviy and hostility of other clergy, the hierarchy and the so-called people-of-God. If clergy, bishops included, really and truly understood abuse, (any kind of abuse), I would not feel the need to blog on occasion. It is very frustraing.
