The Roman Catholic Church hierarchy needs to accept responsibility and shut-up.

“Justice is with the Lord, our God; and we today are flushed with shame, we men of Judah and citizens of Jerusalem, that we with our kings and rulers and priests and prophets, and with our fathers, have sinned in the Lord’s sight and disobeyed him.”  Baruch 1:1-18

So it has been going on forever.  We sin, God calls us back, we sin, God calls us back, and on, and on, and on…  It is not hopeless for the Church because the gates of hell will not prevail.  But it can be soooooo discouraging both seeing the institutional sin of the Church, the cultural sin of the USA and all of the west and of course personal sin which none of us is immune.

Leaders of the Church and of all religions, because sexual abuse is rampant everywhere, need to step up, take responsibility for their sins, ask forgiveness and actually mean it, and stop throwing gasoline on the raging flames of the sexual abuse crisis by saying really dumb things.  Accept responsibility and shut-up.   Lives of victims have already been negatively affected, some destroyed.

We should be flushed with shame for letting this become what it has become instead of dealing with it as it happened.  The more I ponder this whole ugly situation…the cover-up’s…the lies…the evil…the more I see deadly sin taking control not only in  perpetrators but also in many of the members of/in the Church.  Where does destruction of the Church from the inside rank on the scale of sin?  The men who sexually abused others, the men who were enablers, the men who tried to cover it up, the men who lied and abused victims and their families over again have all contributed to destruction in the Catholic Church.  And it is destructive for bishops the world over to say really dumb things like, “We’ll vigorously defend ourselves”, against  the indefensible, and, “We want to keep money for our, (diocese), charitable works”. It is not of God and it is terribly offensive.  As a victim and as a priest I am ashamed of the institutional sin that just does not stop.  UGH!!!!

About follow1in3

I am a Roman Catholic priest ordained for the Diocese of Wilmington, DE who is also a victim of clergy sexual abuse. I am often angered by the insensitiviy and hostility of other clergy, the hierarchy and the so-called people-of-God. If clergy, bishops included, really and truly understood abuse, (any kind of abuse), I would not feel the need to blog on occasion. It is very frustraing.
